Quick answer: you apply yourself on Find a Grant. Get any third-party permissions you need, get a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer, then create an account and submit details of your property and vehicle to OZEV (Find a Grant). Nothing may be installed until OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant).

Before you apply: check you're eligible

The grant is for people who rent or own a flat, with their own private off-street parking space and an eligible vehicle (gov.uk). Check your vehicle is on OZEV's list of approved electric vehicles (gov.uk). Our grant checklist runs through the rest.

Step 1: permissions

Find a Grant's first step is to obtain any necessary third-party permissions for the installation (Find a Grant). gov.uk says you must have proof of all legal rights and permissions, such as from the freeholder of a block of flats (gov.uk). It gives no wording for that proof (gov.uk), so we wrote a permission letter template.

Step 2: a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer

Next, contact an OZEV-authorised installer to get a quote for the work (Find a Grant). The quote is one of your uploads (Find a Grant). gov.uk's installer search finds authorised installers by postcode, and our installer page explains how to check one.

Step 3: the online form on Find a Grant

The OZEV grant form is online. You create an account on Find a Grant and apply, using the form provided to submit details of your property and vehicle to OZEV (Find a Grant).

What to upload

The uploads include (Find a Grant):

  • a signed and dated tenancy agreement, if you rent
  • a utility bill under three months old
  • the installer's quote

Keep your proof of permissions with them (gov.uk).

Check it before you submit

Go through each upload against the list above before you send anything, including the dates: the utility bill has to be under three months old (Find a Grant). A complete first application is the aim.

Step 4: what OZEV sends you

If you're eligible, OZEV lets you and your installer know. The email includes a letter setting out the terms and conditions of the grant, instructions on starting installation, and how your installer can claim the grant once the work is done (Find a Grant).

Step 5: installation, invoice and claim

The chargepoint must not be installed before OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant). After the work, your installer deducts the grant from your invoice, then claims it (Find a Grant). The claim is the installer's job; the application is yours.

The deadline

Applications close on 31 March 2027 at 11:59pm (Find a Grant). The grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500 (gov.uk).

Landlords and on-street homes

Landlords apply on their own Find a Grant page, after getting a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant): see our landlord grant page. Homes with on-street parking only have a separate grant (Find a Grant): see on-street EV charging in Cornwall.

Frequently asked questions

Can my installer apply for me?

Find a Grant asks the applicant to create the account and submit the application (Find a Grant). Your installer's part is the quote you upload and, after installation, the claim (Find a Grant).

Where is the OZEV grant form?

It is the online application on Find a Grant, under Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners (Find a Grant).

Can I book the installation while I wait?

Talk to your installer by all means, but the chargepoint must not be installed before OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant).

How long does OZEV take to decide?

We don't quote a timescale, because we haven't found one published by OZEV for this grant. If you're eligible, OZEV emails you and your installer (Find a Grant).

Where this leaves you

We're an independent guide, not an installer. There are three honest ways to get a charger fitted:

  1. Book a national installer online. Companies such as Pod Energy sell the charger and installation together (affiliate link: we may earn a commission). If you're applying for the grant, the quote must come from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant).
  2. Find a local installer yourself with gov.uk's Find an electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint installer search.
  3. Ask us for an introduction. If we pass your details to a local installer, your confirmation email names the firm. Installers may pay us for introductions; it does not change your price. Ask for an introduction.

Not sure where you stand? Use the grant checklist. The full rules are in our OZEV grant guide, and typical prices are in the Cornwall cost guide.
