Your letting business must be registered
Find a Grant says: "You must be a business either registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC" (Find a Grant). gov.uk also accepts being on the register of social housing providers (gov.uk).
An individual landlord who isn't registered in one of those ways can't use the landlord grant, but their tenant can apply under the renters and flat owners grant (gov.uk), making the application themselves (Find a Grant) with the landlord's written permission (Find a Grant). If that's you, see EV charging for flats and renters and give your tenant the signed permission letter.
Who counts as a residential landlord
You count if you own or manage a property that is let for people to live in, or a property with several units where people live (gov.uk). The grant can only be used on existing properties (gov.uk).
When landlords can't apply
You can't apply if (gov.uk):
- you live in the property
- the property is not residential
- the property is only used for holiday accommodation
- you're installing the chargepoint for a new build or because of another mandatory requirement
Holiday lets: see our holiday-let EV charger page.
The parking space
Each space must be (gov.uk):
- off-street, private and clearly defined
- accessible to your tenant
- owned by you, or one you have the legal right to
What you upload
Find a Grant asks for (Find a Grant):
- a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer (everyone)
- a current insurance policy (private landlords and charities)
- the Land Registry title (freeholders of a multi-unit property)
- evidence of appointment (right to manage and residents' management companies)
- a letter of appointment plus the landlord's documents (property management companies)
Does the tenant need an electric car?
The evidence Find a Grant lists for landlords, as we read it on 3 October 2026, includes nothing about the tenant's vehicle (Find a Grant). That is why our checklist doesn't ask landlords about one.
Letting agents and portfolios
The grant covers up to 200 sockets a year (gov.uk). A property management company that represents a landlord can apply (gov.uk), with its letter of appointment and the landlord's documents (Find a Grant). If you manage several lets in Cornwall, the introduction form below takes the number of sockets.
Your tenant asked for a charger?
A tenant can apply under the renters and flat owners grant, after getting any necessary third-party permissions, which means yours (Find a Grant). Or you can apply under the landlord grant yourself (gov.uk). Our permission letter covers the tenant's request and the permission you sign.
Check your answers
The grant checklist has a landlord branch: registration, how the property is let, the tenant's parking, earlier claims and your evidence. The full rules for tenants and flat owners are in our OZEV grant guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the landlord EV charger grant?
75% of the cost of buying and installing chargepoints, up to £500 per socket, for up to 200 sockets a year (gov.uk).
Can I apply as an individual landlord?
Only if you're registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC (Find a Grant). If not, your tenant can apply under the renters and flat owners grant with your written permission (Find a Grant).
Can I claim it for a holiday let?
Not if the property is only used for holiday accommodation (gov.uk).
Who applies, me or the installer?
You do, on Find a Grant, after getting a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant).
Can I install first and claim later?
No. The chargepoint must not be installed before OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant).
Where this leaves you
We're an independent guide, not an installer. There are three honest ways to get a charger fitted:
- Book a national installer online. Companies such as Pod Energy sell the charger and installation together (affiliate link: we may earn a commission). If you're applying for the grant, the quote must come from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant).
- Find a local installer yourself with gov.uk's Find an electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint installer search.
- Ask us for an introduction. If we pass your details to a local installer, your confirmation email names the firm. Installers may pay us for introductions; it does not change your price. Ask for an introduction.
Not sure where you stand? Use the grant checklist. The full rules are in our OZEV grant guide, and typical prices are in the Cornwall cost guide.
