The EV chargepoint grant is for people who rent or own a flat, with their own private off-street parking space and an eligible vehicle (gov.uk); landlords have a separate grant (gov.uk). OZEV makes the decision.

What your answers mean

Renting or owning a flat, everything in place: you appear eligible

Based on OZEV's published rules you appear eligible (gov.uk), and you have what the application asks you to upload, apart from the installer's quote (Find a Grant). Get that quote from an OZEV-authorised installer, then apply on Find a Grant yourself (Find a Grant). Nothing can be installed until OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant).

Renting or owning a flat, something still missing

Based on OZEV's published rules you appear eligible, apart from these (gov.uk). Before you apply, you need:

  • Parking that counts: off-street, private and clearly defined; it does not have to be part of the property (gov.uk).
  • Written permission from your landlord or freeholder: Find a Grant asks for any necessary third-party permissions first (Find a Grant). Use our letter template.
  • Your uploads: a utility bill under three months old, plus a signed and dated tenancy agreement if you rent (Find a Grant).

Not eligible for the household grant on these answers

  • If you own the house you live in: you can't apply, unless it is converted into flats and you live in one (gov.uk). See our homeowners page.
  • If you have no electric vehicle yet: one on order counts (gov.uk).
  • If you've claimed before: you can't apply if you've already claimed the grant or its predecessors (gov.uk); OZEV decides.

The cost guide shows what affects the price without a grant.

On-street parking only: a different scheme

The household grant needs your home's own private off-street parking space (gov.uk). Homes that park on the street have a separate grant (Find a Grant), and Cornwall Council runs a cross-pavement channel scheme (Cornwall Council). See on-street charging in Cornwall.

It's for a business: a different scheme

See our workplace charging page.

Landlord, evidence ready

On your answers, your letting business meets the registration condition (Find a Grant), the property and parking appear to meet the landlord grant's conditions (gov.uk), and you have the evidence Find a Grant asks for, apart from the installer's quote (Find a Grant). Then apply on Find a Grant; nothing may be installed before OZEV confirms you're eligible (Find a Grant). See our landlord grant page.

Landlord, something still missing

On your answers, the property appears to meet the landlord grant's conditions, apart from these (gov.uk). You need:

  • Parking that counts: off-street, private, clearly defined and accessible to your tenant (gov.uk).
  • Your evidence: a current insurance policy (private landlords) or the Land Registry title (freeholders of a multi-unit property) (Find a Grant).

Landlord: the landlord grant isn't open to you (yet)

  • Registration, if your answer was no or not sure: the landlord grant needs a business registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC (Find a Grant), or a registered social housing provider (gov.uk). To check, search the Companies House register, or look for a VAT registration number from HMRC. If you aren't registered, your tenant can still apply under the renters and flat owners grant with your written permission (Find a Grant): see flats and renters and the permission letter.
  • Only used for holiday accommodation: not eligible (gov.uk). See our holiday-let page.
  • You live in the property: you can't apply (gov.uk).
  • No off-street space your tenant can use: the space must be off-street and accessible to your tenant (gov.uk).
  • A grant claimed here before: check gov.uk's landlord pages first (gov.uk); OZEV decides.

Not sure about an earlier claim? You can't apply if you've already claimed the grant or its predecessors (gov.uk).

Landlord, not sure about an earlier claim here? Check gov.uk's landlord pages first (gov.uk).

Ask for an introduction

Frequently asked questions

Am I eligible for the OZEV grant?

Renters and flat owners with their own private off-street parking space and an eligible vehicle can apply (gov.uk). OZEV decides.

What happens if I ask for an introduction?

Your answers go into our introduction form for you to check and send. If we pass your details to a local installer, your confirmation email names the firm.

Can an individual landlord use the landlord grant?

Only if registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC (Find a Grant). If not, the tenant can apply under the renters and flat owners grant with the landlord's written permission (Find a Grant).

Where this leaves you

We're an independent guide, not an installer. There are three honest ways to get a charger fitted:

  1. Book a national installer online. Companies such as Pod Energy sell the charger and installation together (affiliate link: we may earn a commission). If you're applying for the grant, the quote must come from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant).
  2. Find a local installer yourself with gov.uk's Find an electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint installer search.
  3. Ask us for an introduction. If we pass your details to a local installer, your confirmation email names the firm. Installers may pay us for introductions; it does not change your price. Ask for an introduction.

Not sure where you stand? Use the grant checklist. The full rules are in our OZEV grant guide, and typical prices are in the Cornwall cost guide.
