The Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3) is one of the most popular home EV chargers in the UK — and a peculiar product in 2026. The hardware is excellent: 7.4kW single-phase, 22kW three-phase, 7.3m cable, wifi updates, premium feel. It is on OZEV's eligible chargepoint list for residential grants, so renters and flat owners who qualify can use the OZEV grant, up to £500 (gov.uk). Tesla doesn't sell it via dedicated UK installers like Zappi or Ohme. Here's what fitting one in Cornwall actually costs, who should choose it, and why some Tesla owners are now switching to Zappi anyway.

Why people choose it
- Tesla ecosystem integration. If you drive a Tesla, the Wall Connector talks to your car via the Tesla app — you see charge status, schedule, kWh delivered, all in one place.
- Build quality. Heavier-than-average enclosure, premium cable, satisfying click on the connector. Feels like an Apple product compared with some plasticky alternatives.
- 22kW three-phase capable. If you have a three-phase supply (rare for UK homes, but common on Cornish farms and converted commercial properties), the same unit can do 22kW.
- Universal Type 2. Despite the Tesla branding, it charges any EV with a Type 2 port — VW ID.3, MG4, Polestar 2, Nissan Leaf, BMW i4, etc. You're not locked in.
- Aesthetic. Clean white panel, minimal LED lighting, no garish buttons. Many people prefer it visually.
The OZEV grant position
OZEV's eligible chargepoint model list (updated 22 September 2026) includes the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, marked as eligible for residential grants rather than commercial ones. So the charger itself does not stop you using the OZEV grant at home.
Whether you can use the grant depends on you: it is for people who rent or own a flat, with their own private off-street parking and an eligible vehicle (gov.uk), and it pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 (gov.uk). Check the exact model on your installer's quote against the list.
Tesla Wall Connector vs Zappi for Tesla owners
The interesting question for Tesla owners: do you stick with Wall Connector for ecosystem integration, or buy a Zappi 2.1 for solar diversion?
Counter-intuitively, many Cornwall Tesla owners with solar PV now choose Zappi. Why? Because:
- Tesla cars charge perfectly happily from a Zappi via Type 2 — full speed, full integration with the car's onboard schedule
- Zappi adds solar PV diversion — automatically using surplus solar to charge the car for free
- Ohme adds native Octopus Intelligent Go integration (lowest cost per kWh)

Cornwall installation process
Same as any UK install:
- Source the hardware. You can buy the Wall Connector direct from Tesla's UK shop (around £478-£530) or via approved third-party retailers. Tesla also sells installation packages bundled, but the cost-effectiveness varies.
- Find an installer. Any qualified Part-P electrician can install it, but if you're using the grant the quote must come from an OZEV-authorised installer (Find a Grant). Every install must comply with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 Section 722.
- Survey. Same as any 7kW charger — consumer unit check, cable route, earthing arrangement, DNO notification.
- Install. Typically 3-5 hours for a straightforward install. Three-phase fits take longer and require more planning.
- Commission. Tesla app pairing (for Tesla owners), wifi setup, test charge.
Cornwall-specific Tesla notes
- Range anxiety on long Cornwall trips. Cornwall's Tesla Supercharger network includes sites at Exeter Services (gateway), and increasingly along the A30 corridor. With a Wall Connector at home, you'll rarely use them — but they're there for long-distance fallback.
- Coastal salt air. The Wall Connector's IP rating (IP55 for Gen 3) handles coastal Cornwall reasonably well. Fit it under shelter where possible (porch, garage overhang).
- Three-phase availability. Some Cornish farms, commercial conversions, and rural mills have legacy three-phase supplies. If you do, ask the installer about wiring the Wall Connector for 22kW operation.

Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 is a high-quality unit that suits:
- Homeowners with a driveway (not eligible for OZEV grant anyway)
- Tesla owners who value the ecosystem integration
- Properties with three-phase supplies wanting 22kW from a single unit
- Buyers who don't have (or plan) solar PV
It doesn't suit:
- Solar PV owners (Zappi's solar diversion saves more over time)
- Octopus Intelligent Go customers (Ohme integrates better)
