Cornwall's public EV charging network has expanded substantially over 2023-2026. According to UK-wide figures, by early 2026 there are around 118,000+ public chargepoints across the UK at 45,500+ locations — with Cornwall reflecting that growth via networks including BP Pulse, Osprey, GeniePoint, InstaVolt, Tesla Supercharger, and Cornwall Council's own public network. This guide covers where to find chargers, which networks work best for which use case, and the apps you need.

The major networks operating in Cornwall

GeniePoint (Engie)

Strong Cornwall presence on local authority and public sites. Known locations include:

  • Cornwall College Wildflower Lane (Newquay)
  • Truro Park & Ride (West and East)
  • New County Hall (Truro)
  • Quarry Car Park (Falmouth)
  • Cornwall Council Office (Camborne)
  • Tolvaddon Community Fire Station (Camborne)
  • Cornwall College Trevenson Lane (Redruth)
  • Trevissome Park (Truro)

Typically 50kW rapid chargers, contactless payment, GeniePoint Connect app for account-based use.

InstaVolt

Around 1,500+ chargers UK-wide. Cornwall presence includes Porthleven and increasingly along the A30 corridor. InstaVolt has signalled major UK expansion plans (11,000 chargers by 2030). All InstaVolt chargers are contactless — no app or membership required, just tap your bank card.

Known for clean, reliable hardware and consistent uptime. Premium pricing reflected (typically 70-80p/kWh).

BP Pulse

3,000+ rapid and ultra-fast bays UK-wide. Coverage along major routes (A30, A38) and at retail destinations. App-based with various pricing tiers; PAYG more expensive than the BP Pulse subscription.

Osprey Charging

1,000+ high-powered chargepoints across the UK, including expanding Cornwall coverage. Tends to focus on retail-partner sites (supermarkets, leisure centres). Contactless payment as standard.

Tesla Supercharger

Open to non-Tesla EVs at most UK sites since 2022. Tesla-network reliability is industry-leading. Locations including A30 corridor (Exeter Services gateway), with further Cornwall sites expanding. Use the Tesla app — non-Tesla owners create a free account and pay per session.

Cornwall Council network

Council-owned chargers at car parks, council offices, leisure centres, and park-and-ride sites. Operated under contract by various operators (in 2026, primarily BP Pulse). Typical 7-22kW AC for overnight or longer stays.

Pod Point

Largely retail-partner sites (Tesco, Lidl, garden centres). Free or low-cost charging while you shop. Quick top-ups during normal errands.

Smaller / regional networks

Various Cornwall-specific operators include hospitality-led charging at hotels, holiday parks, and visitor attractions. Eden Project, several National Trust sites, and large country hotels have on-site chargers (often free for visitors). Check Zapmap or the venue website.

The apps you need

  • Zapmap — the universal UK charger map. Shows all networks, real-time availability, plug type, speed, and pricing. Essential for any EV driver.
  • Octopus Electroverse — single-app payment across 700,000+ chargers Europe-wide (via the Hubject / IONITY roaming network). Pay via Octopus account.
  • Tesla app — for Tesla Superchargers (mandatory for non-Tesla owners)
  • BP Pulse, GeniePoint Connect, Pod Point — operator apps if you use those networks regularly
  • Bonnet — aggregated app working across multiple UK networks with a single login

For most casual users, Zapmap for finding + contactless payment for paying is enough. Apps become useful for frequent users wanting account-based pricing.

Route planning tips

For trips into and out of Cornwall:

  • A30 corridor: Increasingly well-served with rapid chargers at Cornwall Services, Trewithen Restaurant, Victoria Inn, and various A30-adjacent retail stops. From Exeter (gateway) into Cornwall is a smooth EV route in 2026.
  • A38 / Plymouth gateway: Plymouth has multiple ultra-fast hubs. Coming into east Cornwall via Saltash, your last rapid before Bodmin is typically at Plymouth or Saltash retail centres.
  • A39 north coast: Less dense rapid network; plan ahead. Wadebridge, Tintagel, Bude all have public chargers but verify availability via Zapmap before relying on them.
  • Far west Penwith: Penzance, St Just, Land's End — chargers exist but limited. Plan to charge in Truro or Hayle if range is critical.
  • Lizard Peninsula: Sparse network. Helston is the main charging stop; further down toward Lizard Village, expect to be running on home charge.

Cornwall-specific gotchas

  • Tourist surge: July-August chargers in tourist hotspots (Newquay, St Ives, Padstow) can have queues. Plan your charging around 10am-2pm or after 8pm.
  • Coastal weather: Some seafront chargers occasionally go offline during storms. Have a backup plan in winter.
  • Mobile signal: Some chargers rely on cellular comms; rural Cornwall mobile signal is patchy. If a charger fails to authenticate, try again or move on.
  • Charger reliability variance: InstaVolt and Tesla consistently score 95%+ uptime; some smaller / older networks score lower (85-90%). Check recent Zapmap reviews before committing to a long detour.

Pre-trip checklist for EV visitors to Cornwall

  1. Download Zapmap (essential)
  2. Set up Octopus Electroverse or Bonnet for multi-network payment (recommended)
  3. Download Tesla app if you're not a Tesla owner — they're worth visiting for reliability
  4. Pre-plan your route with at least two charging stops (one primary, one backup) for trips over 200 miles
  5. If staying at a Cornwall holiday let, confirm whether they have an EV charger (more do every year — see our holiday let guide)

When public charging isn't enough — get home charging

For Cornwall residents, regular reliance on public rapid charging means paying around 70p/kWh — vs around 7p/kWh on Intelligent Octopus Go at home. That's a 10x cost difference. If you can install a home charger (with or without the OZEV £500 grant), the savings are large and consistent. See our installation cost guide.
